In 2013 Turkey witnessed its worst anti-government demonstrations in the history of the State. The city of Istanbul saw the worst of the rioting which was centred around the Gezi Park and Taskim Square area of the city. Eight people died, 8,000 were estimated to have been injured, and 11 people lost an eye, most as a result of plastic bullets fired by the police.
